Who are we?

My name is Karla Zurhaar and live in the eastern part of the Netherlands (Europe).
I live in a village called Dalfsen in an environment with lots of greenery, forests and meadows.

My HBO study Commercial Economics / Marketing Management
has brought me some very interesting positions in business.
After some years as a General Buyer of Fragrances and Fashion Perfumery
at a large Dutch department store
with 65 stores at the time,
I have been working as Head Purchasing (Purchasing Manager) of gold, silver and watches
for a large Dutch group that covered the entire market with three jewelery chains.

These dynamic functions ensured that I was in the prosperous position that I
learned a great deal, traveled a lot, met many interesting people and
fully enjoyed the many beautiful aspects of life.

During this period I got to know my current partner, Bert Rodink
with which I could enjoy one of our hobbies ..... dogs.

Picture
Karla & Bert
Besides his work Bert had as a big hobby: training police dogs,
what he has done with great conviction and success since childhood.

After a very hectic and exciting life living in the 'big city'
we decided years ago to lead a completely different life with our dogs and to move to the countryside.

After an integration period of about 2 years in our new living environment
I started to completely invest in my hobby ..
Bert is pensionated and takes care of our livelihood,
so that as a hobby breeder I can give myself completely to the breed ......

it has resulted in what it is now.
We are now a few generations further in our breeding and have good insight into
what we can do
expect from our descendants,
except for what nature still offers us as a surprise.

My first litter was born in our former home,
which was located at the Burgemeester Rijkenspark in the western part of the Netherlands.
That made me decide to register my base in my kennel name: van 't Rijkenspark.

With great enthusiasm, I determined our goals at the time and
with some pride after so many years not yet adjusted.

My goals are to breed a healthy long-living Bernese with a fantastic character.
Of course, the dogs have to look like a Bernese: large, imposing and with rich colors.

It goes without saying that my pups grow up in the living room and are part of our family.
I only have a litter if I want to keep a puppy out of this combination,
because I do not breed to be able to breed.
Of course I breed without being financially dependent on the results.

5 x CACIB,

Of course my dogs are part of our family and live with us in and around our house,
not in lofts, kennels or barns.
They go with us to the forest to run and play.

Every week they are brushed and combed.
We try to wash our dogs every 6 weeks.

that they follow Obedience.
We also frequently visit ring training sessions.

Our dogs are part of our family and
are allowed to spend their old days with us on the couch

and won't be rehomed.

I believe in good nutrition for humans and animals, so also in the growth of puppies and

maintenance of adult dogs.
Longevity is generated by having all signals on green ...
through inheritance, growth, but also through good nutrition.

At this moment we feed our dogs
Pro Plan (dry food in the high market segment) &
Carnivoer (fresh meat feed in the high market segment)
to full satisfaction.

I have since become a member of various breed clubs abroad

who provide me with a lot of information about the breed.

I have been a member of the Dutch breed club VBSH for 15 years
and have been allowed to watch in the kitchen of this breed club as Vice President,
organization breedtests, organization Klubshow and chairman events.
Unfortunately gossip and personal crusades play a very big role in this club
which, in my opinion, the interests of the breed are not properly represented.
Because I do not want to be a partner of a breed club like this,
I canceled this membership in 2008.

We are members of the FCI (umbrella organization of the Raad van Beheer) and follow their rules.

Our first Bernese was Ayla from the Bennora.

Because two years later, we wanted a second berner and wanted 'a child of our child Ayla',
we have breed tested her at the breedclub VBSH
whether she could be used for breeding.
Ayla was approved with an 'excellent' qualification
for her character and a qualification 'good' for her exterior.
She was x-rayed on hips and elbow dysplasia, with 'free' as results.

We got our second berner from Ayla ... the first born bitch from the first litter of Ayla.
What a fantastic dog has become our Palmer ...
During the breed test she received an Excellent for her character,

but in exterior she did not look like a berner ...
the colors were there, but the construction was not in accordance with
the official breed standard of a berner.
What did we have a fantastic time together.
We have followed obedience and agility at a high level.
Palmer had the character of a Border Collie,
so had a very strong 'will to please'.

Because Ayla and Palmer, in our opinion, were not suitable for further use for breeding,
but for us they were fantastic family dogs,
we decided
  seriously to look around abroad
to new bloodlines that could help us realize our goals in breeding.

With the help of experienced breeders at home and abroad are ultimately
two bloodlines form the basis of my kennel:

our foundation bitches are:

we now have international and national partnerships
with other hobby breeders with the same goals.

that our offspring with excellent results are
excellent breed representatives on character and beauty.

Taking into account the results of the health research (1990s)

this was done by the VBSH in collaboration with the University in Utrecht,
I feel it as my duty to breed Bernese Mountain Dogs,
to check out the pedigrees of the ideal partner for our bitches,
to trace the offspring of the potential male and brothers, sisters and

to control ancestors as far as I am concerned.

Because long and healthy life is very important to us, we are happy to participate
the health research from Prof. Rutteman, Utrecht University,
who is searching for the gene of the MH (Maligne Hystiocytose cancer type)
in the Bernese Mountain Dog.

This gene can be detected by taking blood samples from veterans.
An analysis is made of which bloodlines does / does not carry this gene .

Meanwhile we have registered 6 veterans in the past.

Meanwhile France has a Pre-test, where markers have been found at a chromosome,

who may contribute to whether or not the risk of death is due to Hystio Sarcome.
Unfortunately, the markers do not tell at what age the effected dog dies.
This can be at young but also at old age.

Meanwhile, we have had a number of dogs tested for these markers in France.

I try to be as clear as possible about the bloodlines with which we work
and will provide all positive but also all negative information
to publish about these bloodlines on my website.

If we want to pursue a healthy long-lived breed, then
breeders must be transparent with their info.

You will also find statistics with our dogs
what happened to brothers and sisters from the same litter.

We would also like to receive from owners of 'Rijkenspark' dogs
information when their dog dies and what the cause of death has been.

Thanks to the many trips we make to shows and seminares at home and abroad,
I have come across a number of fellow 'sufferers', who have been infected by the same 'virus'.

We are in the happy possession of family, friends and acquaintances,

that enable us to grow our hobby into what it is today.

They help us as a babysitter for our dogs when we are traveling abroad
for exhibitions, seminars or matings.

Some of our dogs also live with these beloved friends,
they offer them a family situation with or without children, for which we are very grateful to them.

With Kea Enters we have a very special relationship ....

.
Kea and her three Berneses sometimes socialize a puppy for us,
who is not allowed to go to his / her owner due to quarantine arrangements.
Kea gives this puppy a life like a dog needs to get .....
many environmental stimulation in their first year of life and
an education through the method of the dog whisperer.

We want to say thanks for what she does, did and will do for us and our dogs!

In other countries we are not only looking for new blood,
that we combine with our bitches,

in our family, we give you an overview of all imported pups,
